From USA To UK
Updated: Jul 16
It's time to address the elephant in the room... Where have we been for the past year? Why haven't we been posting online? Today, we'll try to answer these questions.
We've relocated to England! A little over a year ago, we sold our house, packed our bags, grabbed our dog, and started the long journey over the "pond"! Most people would fly in an aeroplane when they cross the Atlantic Ocean, but not us. We chose a longer but more luxurious route, a transatlantic ocean liner! We set sail on the Queen Mary 2 from New York City harbour on January 3rd, 2019 and commenced a seven day voyage across the world's second largest ocean.
Our time on board the ship was absolutely I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E. Words cannot even describe the wonderful time that we had. It was the kind of experience that just doesn't seem real. Suffice it to say, it was the most amazing week that either one of us has ever experienced. Oh, and our dog had quite the extravagant experience as well! Ava, our "budget puppy", enjoyed a luxurious cruise filled with 360º views of the ocean, steak for dinner, and even her own personal "butler".
So we moved to England, but that still doesn't answer the question, "Why haven't we been posting for the past year?" Basically, it's because we've been adjusting...
We had to adjust physically. As you can imagine, relocating your entire life from one country to another is not the easiest undertaking. It's been a challenging transition from the USA to the UK. Learning how to drive on the opposite side of the road is just the beginning! We had to buy all new furniture, various household items, a car, a new dog bed 🐶, the list goes on and on.
We had to adjust culturally. Just because people in the United Kingdom speak English, doesn't mean that life is the same as in the United States. It's VERY different. Even though Jenna had spent the majority of her life growing up in England, even she didn't realize how difficult it would be to readapt to her homeland. Sam still doesn't get English humour at times; he's mastered the art of laughing on the outside, while on the inside he's thinking "I have no idea why this is funny."
We had to adjust personally. When we were thinking of moving to England, in our minds it was a simple transition. "We'll arrive in England, carry on with business as usual, and live happily ever after." Little did we realize how challenging it would be to transition and how long that transition would take. A few months after we moved to Exeter, we soon realized how much different life was going to be for us from now on. That meant that WE needed to adapt before our business ever could.
So now it's time to adjust professionally. So here we are, a year (and a few cups of tea) later and we finally feel like this is our home. We have eaten our fair share of Yorkshire puddings, we don't accidentally drive on the right side of the road anymore, and life feels settled again. It's now time to reignite the flame of Sam and Jenna Photography.
It's not easy starting over in a new country, but we're just going to "keep calm and carry on".
We LOVE capturing precious photographs for people that we know will be treasured for years to come. Ultimately, a business that focuses on documenting happy memories can succeed in any country and any culture. Moving to the UK was a difficult decision to make, but we have loved every minute that we have been here. We look forward to all of the exciting memories that we will continue to make and capture through our lens!
